On the 28th of January 2024 in Thailand, a harrowing video was captured depicting a British daredevil who unwittingly jumped to his death after his parachute failed to open during a base jump from a 29-story building.
Nathy Odinson, 33, who posts videos of his stunts on social media, climbed atop the building in the coastal resort of Pattaya.
He smiled as he checked and adjusted his gear, including a camera that wasn’t recording, so he removed his helmet to press a button.
The harrowing video shows him crashing into a tree and landing on the ground after the green pilot chute he was holding failed to deploy.
He was declared dead by paramedics, and an investigation into the tragi-comic incident has been launched. The police said the parachute was broken, but Odison’s brother said it was because of a mistake made by the user.
The term base jumping comes from the acronym BASE, which refers to the four categories of fixed objects from which a person can leap: buildings, antennas, spans, and the earth.
Jumping is much more dangerous than skydiving because jumpers only have a few seconds to react in case something goes wrong and typically don’t have any recourse.
